Philip Glass and Jon Gibson to Perform at UWC-USA

Internationally celebrated composer Philip Glass, who celebrated his 75th birthday this year, will perform on Wednesday, April 4 at 7:30 p.m. in UWC-USA’s Kluge Auditorium. The concert is free and open to the public.

Hailed by New York Magazine as one of the most influential composers of the 20th century, Glass is known for his minimalist and classicist musical style. In this special performance, he is joined by Jon Gibson—also a composer and a founding member and performer with the Philip Glass Ensemble—in what promises to be an unforgettable listening experience.

Glass founded the Philip Glass Ensemble in 1968. He composed his first opera, Einstein on the Beach, for the Ensemble in 1976. Since then, he has composed other operas, musical theatre works, symphonies, concertos, solo works, chamber pieces, and film scores. Three of his film scores have been nominated for Academy Awards. Through his music and his wide-ranging collaborations with artists ranging from Twyla Tharp to Allen Ginsberg, Woody Allen to David Bowie, Glass has had an extraordinary and unprecedented impact upon the musical and intellectual life of his times.

Gibson is a flautist, saxophonist, and composer. He has performed in the premier of In C by Terry Riley, and Drumming by Steve Reich, as well as Reich’s 1967 composition Reed Phase, which Reich wrote especially for him. Gibson has also performed and recorded with other composers, including Christian Wolff, David Behrman, Harold Budd, Alvin Curran and Frederic Rzewski.

This performance is made possible through the generosity of Virginia Dwan, whose enduring gift of the Dwan Light Sanctuary continues to inspire generations of UWC-USA students and visitors.

Martin Luther King, Jr. has been reduced to an abstract part of our nation’s history, remembered as a caricature or, worse, an excuse for a holiday, as if he lived hundreds of years ago. But he is of our time. His words are not quaint. He can speak for himself and he does so here.

“Our loyalties to the country should not be measured on our ability to kill, our loyalty to our country should be measured on our abilities to lead the country to higher heights of democracy.”

And the conference ends, fittingly, in an impromptu song from the incredible Isabel Dawson, a woman so much more than just Rosario Dawson’s mother.

Social Issue Film Making

sharbeldiarbakerli:

This workshop facilitated by famous actress Rosario Dawson and movie director Pamela Tanner Boll inspired the youth on how to spread awareness through media, in the conference “ACTIVATE” at UWC-USA. Intense and thought-provoking issues were raised and we all discussed them. Tanner and Dawson also taught the basics and challenges of film making.
